Monthly Care Projects – Each month a charitable organization or project is chosen for the congregation to support.
We continue to collect Milk bags, eye glasses and pop can tabs for various organizations.
Mission and Service – Our church actively supports the United Church of Canada Mission and Service Fund. Donations received support ministry and relief work in Canada and other countries. Donations can be made in your weekly envelope. From time to time, special appeals are made when disasters strike. For information on how the United church is responding to various needs in the world, please go to http//www.united-church.ca (see link on home page).

A group of dedicated individuals from St. Luke’s, under the leadership of Rev. Erin Todd and Allan Kerr, conduct and assist with church services at Finlandia and other nursing homes in Sudbury.
Out Of The Cold
Members of St. Luke’s work with a team from St. Andrew’s to feed those who attend their Out of the Cold dinners held on Friday nights. Dates for this year to be announced. See our upcoming events calendar. Please contact Joanne Blackwell for more information about this vital ministry in our community, or to confirm that you can help out.
Fairtrade Coffee
Fairtrade Coffee is served each Sunday and at special events.
Mitt Tree
Each winter we accept donations of mitts for our Mitt Tree. These mitts are given to the Salvation Army for those in need.

Northern Lights Prayer shawl Ministry
“What you are doing is far different from everyday needlework. As in all life, intention is everything. Your shawls are created with the intention to be healing objects. This is wonderful. whoever wears the shawl feels the presence of love, of healing, of hope, of faith and of God.”
Our outreach group meets on the first Friday of each month, at 1:30 pm., at St. Luke’s. Your are invited to join in creating shawls (no experience necessary) to distribute in the community. refreshments are provided.
The Nickel City Knitters
This group meets at St. Luke’s every Thursday night throughout the year from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Starting up the first Thursday after Labour day, going right through the summer until mid-August. They also take a few weeks off from mid-December, restarting the first Thursday after New Year’s in January. The group is an open group and have on average about 12 weekly participants. They have been meeting now for over 14 years and are heavily involved in community projects such as project Linus, Shawl Ministry, Canada Comforts as well as donating knitting and crochet items to the food bank, and other local charities. St. Luke's United Church History
Our History
In the spring of 1939, a group of Protestants living in the Minnow Lake area felt the need for a weekly church service and applied for the help of a student minister. Mr. Norman Kelly was sent and church services were held in the public school on Barry Street; though not for long. The building of St. Luke’s United Church was begun almost immediately, and completed with remarkable speed, almost entirely by volunteers. The official dedication was carried out on Sunday, February 2, 1941 by Rev. Tuttle, then the Moderator of the United Church of Canada.
From its dedication in 1941 until 1948, the St. Lukes church building was the centre of all congregational and many community activities including Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and CGIT.
During the years 1949 to 1956, a badly needed church hall was built, an organ purchased, new pews installed, and the exterior of the church was bricked. The years 1959 to 1967 saw a new manse completed and furnished. Soon thereafter, St. Luke’s ceased to be a single-point charge, and aligned with St. Andrew’s (Coniston) and Grace United Churches.
The years thereafter saw many revisionings and reconfigurations, as the individual churches in the area sought to serve their congregants and the community more economically and efficiently. During the years 1972 to 1973, St. Luke’s –Grace congregations amalgamated.
In 1977 a Garson-Falconbridge-Coniston-Minnow Lake Charge was formed and named Nickel District Pastoral Charge.
Through the years 1986 to 1991 our four point charge was pastored by the husband and wife teams of Rev. Ross and Rev. Jean Leckie, followed by Rev. Thom Davies and Rev. Lynn Godfrey.
In 1994, when Rev. Davies answered a call to go to Lively, Julia Rose—a Lay Pastoral Minister in Training—joined Lynn Godfrey on the staff team.
June 1996 saw the cessation of the four point charge, and the creation of a new two point charge with the newly formed Trinity United Church in Garson.
In its present incarnation, Nickel District Pastoral Charge has faithfully been served by the Reverends Waldo Gundrum, Ian Sloane and now Erin Todd.
These are but a few of the events that have taken place in the seventy years St. Luke’s has stood on it’s rocky but prominent spot on Bancroft Drive.
