St Michael & All Angels History

St Michael's History

Land

The land was donated by Frederick Arthur Scott of Sutton in remembrance of his mother Amelia Scott who lived in the parish of Sutton for 30 years.
A small plaque dated October 1914 commemorates the occasion.

Buildings

The first church on the site was a temporary church dedicated in 1913 and when the new church was completed this building became the church hall, this is still used for that purpose at the present time(2019).

Click for Plans for the two churches

The foundation stone of the present church was laid by the Most Reverend and Right Honourable the Lord Archbishop of York, Cosmo Gordon Lang DD. Primate of England and Metropolitan on Thursday December 3rd 1914.

Funding

The Incorporated Church Building Society granted £100 in 1914 towards the cost of building the church on condition that the seating was free.

First Service

A Sung Mass was held in the new church to celebrate Palm Sunday, April 13th 1919.

The service was conducted by the Reverend R T Newcombe, Vicar.

Other Dates
The Vestries were added to the building in 1925, mainly paid for by monies raised over a 5 year period by members of the Sewing Guild.

The War Memorial for those of the parish who died in the First World War was dedicated on July 8th 1920.

The Stained Glass Window on the South Side of the church was dedicated on September 8th 1921 to the memory of Sydney Elvin.(see WW1 Memorial)

The Lady Chapel was dedicated at Michaelmas 1921 to be used for weekday masses. The Lady Chapel has been refurbished twice since 1921.

The original Altar had dorsal and riddle curtains, as did the High Altar, both these where changed with the introduction of the service being taken with the celebrant facing the congregation.

In 1954 the parish boundaries where changed in order to form St. Aidan's Parish.

St. Margaret's Church was built as a daughter church on Longhill Estate in 1959.

St. Michael and All Angels was granted parish status in 1926.

It is believed that the organ was in fact made from re-cycled parts.

It was built to the specification of the organist at that time, Mr William Branton.

Stations of The Cross

These Stations of The Cross were painted by Eastmount School Art Department and were displayed in the church until the late 1980's when they were replaced by a modern set of cast figures given in memory of Revd. John Borne.
