St. Paul's Presbyterian Church History

2016 marks the 150th Anniversary of the coming of the Presbyterian Church to Saskatchewan. St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Prince Albert, will mark the occasion with a special Service on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 2pm.

In 1866, a missionary party led by the Rev. James and Mrs. Mary Nisbet was sent out from the Kildonan Church of the Red River Settlement in Manitoba to begin work among the Cree People along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. After an arduous two-month trek with oxen pulling Red River Carts, the party chose a spot on the river bank to begin its work and to establish its mission. That spot, called “kistahpinanihk” (“sitting pretty place”) by the Cree was renamed “Prince Albert” by Nisbet. Thus 2016 marks a three-fold milestone: the coming of Presbyterian worship and witness to Saskatchewan, the establishment of St. Paul’s Church, and the founding of Prince Albert.

Fittingly the Service on June 18th – in the historic St. Paul’s Church – will be a gathering from across the Province and beyond. The Guest Preacher will be the Rev. Angus McGillivray, a former Minister in St. Paul’s. The Organist will be William Sgrazzutti, Organist and Choir Leader from First Presbyterian Church, Regina; the soloists will be Peter McGillivray, Baritone, a son of the St. Paul’s Manse, and Judith Matheson Oatway, Soprano, a descendant of the Red River Settlers.
