Who we are

Welcome to St Saviour's Church

We are a lively, friendly, welcoming church with both informal and traditional aspects. We are passionate about prayer, see the Bible as our inspiration and are open to the Holy Spirit. We follow the call to love and reach out to others around us with God’s love.

We are based in our church building on St Saviour’s road, Community Hub We meet each Sunday Morning at 10.30 am and 7pm in the evenings. We meet together throughout the week in various groups, prayer meetings, home groups and at our Fairtrade Friday Café.

We encourage people to grow in faith, through Bible based sermon series, either on themes or a book of the bible, individually and through bible study in our home groups. For those looking into faith, we regularly run the Alpha Course which covers the basics of Christian faith.

St Saviour’s Parish houses over 8,000 people, with a mixture of housing. In the past, Larkhall was one of the poorer areas of Bath. Today the area is more mixed, but still has a number of houses run by Housing Associations. We have strong links with the three church schools in the parish; St. Saviour’s Junior School, St. Saviour’s Infants and St. Mark’s Secondary school and some church members serve as governors for these schools.

St. Saviour’s is part of the Bath Deanery, which is in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. We are active in the wider City of Bath, regularly supporting joint church initiatives in the city. We also work together with other churches locally, including Larkhall United Reformed Church, Swainswick and Woolley (part of our joint benefice), Landsdown, Batheaston, Bathford, Bathampton and Walcot Churches.

St Saviour's Church History

St Saviour’s church building is a Grade II listed Georgian church, built and consecrated in 1832 to serve the communities of Larkhall and Grosvenor. The Eastern aspect was extended in 1882 creating the chancel. In the 1970-80s a hall (The Fellowship Centre) was created internally at the back of the church. In 2001 the church & kitchen were reordered, the pews replaced with chairs, underfloor heating and it was carpeted. The main western entrance was also renewed with a new staircase and entrance way. These changes allowed flexibility in the use of the church building and it has been used since for many church and community events, including concerts, charity fundraisers, meals, messy church and children’s holiday clubs.

In January 2016 a second phase of internal renovation was started on the church, renewing the fellowship centre and creating four new rooms for the use of children, young people’s groups, and members of the community. This will allow the church to be even more available and flexible in the space that it offers to the congregation and the community of Larkhall.

“St Saviour’s church, Walcot, the foundation stone of which was laid on 2nd April, 1829, is erected in the eastern extremity of the parish. In point of architectural beauty, both externally and internally, this church is generally considered to be unrivalled by any ecclesiastical structure of modern date in this part of the country. The tower forms a very beautiful object to the surrounding neighbourhood.”

From a historical newspaper article describing St Saviour’s church soon after its erection.
