Who we are

Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to join us on the Bethel Green church page at JoinMyChurch.com so that we can introduce ourselves, our history, share the progress being made in construction, and provide you with information. Bethel Baptist Church has been serving the community from this location for over seventy-five years. However, with both the congregation and the roof aging, it was evident that change had to come. So we began the journey of redeveloping the Church-owned site to allow for the construction of a smaller Church in combination with 19 apartment units designed especially for seniors. We have organized a new non-profit corporation in which all the future residents will be members, and re-zoned the site for this unique project.

The word "unique" frequently comes to mind when you hear about our project. It is a unique opportunity for seniors - who do not have to be Baptists - wishing to remain in the community they love, close to friends & family (and the excellent shopping one block to the east on Bayview Avenue!). We are fortunate to have one of the best locations in the city. Each unit has unique features and there is a great community life style. The way we are financing the building - through a non-profit membership organization, and the sale of "life leases" - is a relatively new concept that communities of seniors are using to create buildings for themselves.

I am the Chairman of the Board and Pastor of the Church so please feel free to call me at 416 485 4611 if you want to learn more about our history and our plans for the future. If you would like more specific details about availability or would like to see more drawings please do not hesitate to speak to our Marketing Manager, Roy St John (416-640-2661). Also, please contact Roy St. John to be placed on a waiting list or if you would like to visit at the site or book a personal tour. I look forward to hearing from you.

Bethel Baptist Church Toronto Service Times

The Church is located in the Northeast corner of the building (top left corner in the drawing) with the entrance to the housing being through the main doors facing Millwood. A lounge will be used by the congregation for coffee after the Church service on Sunday mornings, and at other times will be used by the residents of the building. Just imagine coming into the lounge on a snowy winter day to play cards or to hear a concert in the Church area. For use in better weather, there is a patio area from the lounge, with double doors to the right of the fireplace. As well, there is a lovely landscaped garden nestled in the Southeast corner of the site. There are only three residential units in the South portion of the building with the remaining 16 units on the floors above accessed by an elevator.

Bethel Baptist Church History

The building has been designed for ease of living for seniors by Architect Robert Reimers Inc. Examples of other work he has done can be viewed at his web site www.finespacedesign.com.

Attention to details in the organization of spaces, non-glare, non-slip surfaces, and a stairway promenade to encourage the use of the stairs for exercise are all features of the building. It has also been designed to higher energy efficiency standards to help meet our national Kyoto energy commitment, and to help you save money on your monthly energy costs. Each unit has unique design features as the individual unit layouts show.

The building also includes an elevator and underground parking garage. Each unit will have one spot dedicated for the resident's use. The Church is located on the ground floor with its own entrance from Whitewood. However, the space has been designed to allow other uses to occur at different times of the week as a wide range of activities, as decided by the residents, occurs. From playing cards in the lounge to hearing a presentation from a local politician in the Church area, a wide range of activities is possible.

One of the most important things about this building is the community it is going to create. Each household will become a member of the non-profit corporation and have the opportunity to share information about the ongoing management and operation of the building. There will be a volunteer Board of Directors as well as professional property management from Affordable Property Management Inc. This experienced firm under the leadership of Maureen Barrey specializes in small buildings like Bethel Green giving it excellent service.

The future residents will be seniors, each with a reason to want to live in this neighbourhood. Many have links to family or friends in the area. It is not necessary to be a member of the Baptist Church to become a resident of this building. Rather, any senior with an interest in an active, community-related life-style might choose to join our community.

As part of the social community tea parties are held in the lounge to facilitate discussions about the operation of the building or the planning of social events. Already a gardening committee has been formed and an ad hoc art committee placed donated art throughout the building. The official opening and dedication service occurred on April 29th, 2007.
