Who we are
Welcome to Grace Presbyterian Church. May the peace of Christ be with you. Grace is a community sharing the love of God in greater Saint John, New Brunswick. We are part of The Presbyterian Church in Canada and are very active in both the local and national work of our denomination. I hope you find navigating this site informative and helpful in understanding more about what we believe as Christians and what we do within the church, community and world.
Our congregation is made up of all ages and you will find them to be hospitable, engaging and fun to walk through life with. Grace Presbyterian has a morning service which is organized around traditional Reformed patterns of worship and is influenced by the very best of ecumenical traditions found within the historic Christian Church. We believe God’s grace is made known through the proclamation of the scripture as it is preached and taught on Sunday and throughout the week. We also believe in conjunction with the Word, that the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion are a means of grace and vital to the life of each member and adherent in the congregation.

John Crawford was raised in Hampton New Brunswick along the Kennebecasis River along with his three siblings: Kim, Faye and Dale. His parents Howard and Ellamae were shop keepers in Hampton for many years before retiring. John is married to Heather Wade and they have three children: Ryan (13), Andrew (12) and Timothy (10). They currently live in Quispamsis, New Brunswick.
John graduated from Kennebecasis High School in 1987 and went on to attend Atlantic Baptist University earning a B.A. in Biblical Studies in 1991. John continued to pursue his studies at Acadia University where in 1995 he earned a M.Div., and in 2007 a D.Min. John was ordained to the Christian Ministry in 1996 at First Chipman United Baptist Church at Gaspereau Forks, New Brunswick. He served there until the summer of 1997 when he accepted a call to The Tabusintac Pastoral Charge of The Presbyterian Church in Canada. He served this three point Charge for six years before accepting a call to St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church in Saint John New Brunswick in January 2004. John served there until St. Matthew’s and St. John and St. Stephen amalgamated in 2008. John has served on various Synod Committees as a member and convener such as Personnel and Camp Geddie. John is a former Moderator of The Synod of The Atlantic Provinces (135 Annual Meeting) and is currently Convener of the Synod Council.
John’s community involvements and passions include serving as a board member of The John Howard Society of Saint John and New Directions of Saint John. He is also Padre of Branch 55, Royal Canadian Legion in Rothesay, New Brunswick. John also has a passion for Scottish history, theology, and genealogy and is a member of The Saint Andrew’s Society of Saint John and in his free time he is an avid fisherman and Class II Guide. He enjoys any opportunity to fish for trout and salmon in the streams, rivers and lakes of New Brunswick.

A place of tranquility, creativity and discovery
The Whole People of God
The Whole People of God curriculum is a lectionary based program for children ages 4 to grade 12. Through stories, songs, prayer, games, and craft activities the children and youth are prepared for full participation in the worshipping community. Since the program is lectionary based the children are learning about the same scriptures that the adults in their lives are hearing during the worship service. This enables the family to participate in meaningful follow-up conversations at home about the lessons that would not be possible if this model was not followed. The lectionary and our curriculum are based on the seasons of the Christian year with each season usually being its own unit.
The children are divided into classes based on grade level- preschool to early elementary, later elementary, and youth group- grades 6-12. Each class hears the same scripture from the lectionary each week but in a format and in a language that each will understand. Younger children will be read the story and perhaps have puppets or picture cutouts to demonstrate the story. Older children will also have the story read to them and the youth group will follow along or read the story themselves from the Bible. Discussions, art activities, and games are then used to tie the children’s’ own experiences into the story they have heard. The youth group may also discuss how to live a Christian life in today’s world.
No collection is taken, no dress code is required and enrollment is free. All children are welcome to share and grow in our Worship Centre for Children.

Grace Presbyterian Church History
The Church of St. John & St. Stephen was formed in 1917 as the result of the union of the former St. John Presbyterian Church, founded in 1843, and St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, founded in 1836. The cornerstone of the present building on Coburg Street was laid in 1963. The building itself is spacious and centrally located, reflecting outreach mission as a key facet of the congregation’s ministry.
Saint Matthew’s Kirk was located on Douglas Avenue and was a daughter of the former Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Kirk (now Saint Andrew’s and Saint David’s United Church) located on Germain Street in Saint John. Saint Andrew’s was the oldest Presbyterian congregation in Saint John and as such was responsible for spreading Presbyterianism across the city, as well as Saint John and Kings Counties. In 1894, Saint Andrew’s began work in the North end of the city to establish a Presbyterian Kirk. St. Matthew’s was home to working class Scots who worked at the dry docks and lived in the North end of the city. The Kirk thrived until the 1970’s.
Independently, these two founding congregations sought ways to grow and strengthen in number and mission. In January 2008, following a year of process and prayerful consideration, the congregations of St. John & St. Stephen and St. Matthew’s were officially amalgamated, and formed the congregation of Grace Presbyterian Church.
