Minute Meditations

Humility

  • Brokenness enables us to truly be humble, which in turn enables us to look for help. Christ said that the meek shall inherit the earth and that he came to call sinners, not the righteous
  • God of all Light and Truth, keep me humble and honest, and that will be more than enough work for you
  • Humble God, make us like you. You do not lord it over us, but wait patiently for us to change. May we do the same with our brothers and sisters on the journey
  • Humility is an elusive virtue. The more we pursue it—and the more we seem to acquire it—the more we take pride in our accomplishment, and we find ourselves back at square one
  • When considering your faults and virtues, look carefully at whom you compare yourself to. If you compare yourself with those far from God, you will become more like them. Compare yourself to the saints if you want to be become one.
  • Humility reflects God. When we witness a magnificent sunset or sunrise, view mountains rising majestically against the clear blue sky or watch the variations of sea foam on the ocean’s weaves, our hearts are lifted humbly toward the Lord.
  • If you look hard enough, or from another person's vantage point, you might discover the extraordinary in your seemingly ordinary life.
  • You should be praised by the lips of your neighbor, and not by your own mouth. You should be commended by the work you have done, not by what you said you have done.
  • The rule of truth is to do nothing to advance yourself in this world that actually makes you go backward in God's eyes
  • True humility, the queen of virtues, the angelic virtue, is a jewel so precious that those who possess it become like the angels of God in heaven, even though clothed in mortal flesh
  • Holy purity is granted by God when it is asked for with humility
  • The great message of the beatitudes is that, regardless of what the proud will or will not do concerning the current status of things, the situation of the poor and humble is preferable to that of the rich and proud
  • We must be humble enough to recognize that we are not the center of the universe, but faithful enough to know that God frequently acts as though we are.
