About Our Church
The Abundant Joy Christian Center began at pastor’s house when four women asked him to host a Saturday morning Bible study. Internationally known senior pastors offered words of encouragement. Our first worship service was held at the ballroom of the Newark Gateway Hilton, Sunday, February 4, 1996, Newark, NJ. After a few months, we moved to the Church at the Crossroads, East Orange, NJ, where we conducted our first baptism service. November 1996, God opened up a door to move to Jersey City. We are a community-oriented congregation thus in March 2004 we changed our name to The Abundant Joy Community Church. We seek to make the Gospel of Jesus Christ real in our daily lives. We are members of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey.

Leader Bio:
Dr. Ashley has been an ordained minister of the Gospel since 1982. But before he accepted his call to ministry, as a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) he was an Assistant Buyer at J.C. Penney in charge of a $120M lingerie business.
Not realizing that he would become the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Recruitment at Andover Newton Theological School (ANTS), Newton, Massachusetts he was led to continue his education in a major that would assist him in his life’s work. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Theory from Montclair State College in 1981.
He began his preaching career as a seminarian at First Baptist Church in Tewksbury, Massachusetts in 1981 and was called to pastor New Hope Baptist Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1982 where he pastored until 1984.
He was then called to pastor Monumental Baptist Church in Jersey City in 1986. Pastor Ashley took the church to a new level increasing membership. During his tenure at Monumental, he commuted to Massachusetts and completed his Doctoral degree by 1992. His major was Leadership Development. In 1996 Dr. Ashley moved on and founded the Abundant Joy Baptist Church (now known as The Abundant Joy Community Church).
On the other side of the sacred desk Dr. Ashley is a psychotherapist certified in Marriage and Family Counseling. Dr. Ashley has been a professor at several universities and seminaries. Currently he is the Acting Dean and Associate Professor of Practical Theology at New Brunswick Theological Seminary at the New Brunswick campus as well as the St. Johns University campus in Queens, New York.
Dr. Ashley co-edited with Rabbi Stephen Roberts entitled Disaster Spiritual Care: Practical Clergy Responses to Community (2008).

Lord Jesus, master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!"
