Christ CME Church History

The History of Christ Christian Methodist Episcopal Church The Christian Prayer Band, from which this Church originated, was organized by the Reverend J.C. Thomas in the year of our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Fifty Six.

Reverend Thomas started this Christian work doing door to door evangelism, His endeavor was to seek the lost and "non-churched" to help bring them into complete harmony with the will of God. His aim was to help individuals grow spiritually through the means of Grace and to serve God in daily living. Spreading the Gospel held top priority in the evangelistic foundation of the Church.

The Church was organized in the home of Sister Julia Coston (deceased) with six members and some well-wishers. Rev. Thomas was inspired by the urging of the Holy Spirit to name the Church-Christ Christian Methodist Episcopal Church-with Christ being the overseer.

On 0ctober 7,1957, Christ C.M.E. Church held its first official Opening and Dedication Service. Mayor Edward Bergin gave the first welcome address and official welcome to the city. The Rev. Nelson B. Brown, Pastor of the McCullough Temple C.M.E. Church, preached the Dedication sermon.

The first few years, our services were held a 276 Cherry Street, and we were blessed at this location, both spiritually and financially. As our membership continued to grow, we needed a larger place of worship to accommodate our members. July 1969, we moved to 186 Cherry Street - Pride Building, owned by the NAACP, where we worshiped there for about three and a half years.

On the eve of our formal dedication, the entire night was spent in prayer at the Church. We had a short service on Cherry Street and the entire congregation marched from Cherry Street to Maple Street to mark the official opening of May 13,1973, singing, "The Lord has Brought me, from a mighty long way". The Bishop at the time, Henry C. Bunton, preached the Dedication message. Many donations were given during this service, one being a rare Bible which was presented to the Church by Mr. Gilben Simon of Waterbury.

ln the year of 1983 the Cornerstone was laid by the Knights of Pythias of Waterbury, with the Bishop Oree Broomfield, Sr., officiating, ln the year of 1985, extensive excavation was necessary around the Church building for preservation of the outer walls. All the Trustees and men who weren't even officers pitched in and helped with the project. lt was such a great thing to see the men of the church working together to help maintain our home.

0n September 8, 1987, we lost our Pastor and Founder, The Reverend J.C. Thomas. lt was a very difficult time for all of us and to help us through the healing process, our Presiding Elder at the time, Rev. Dr. William L. Austin, was immediately assigned as Pastor.

On June 26, 1988, we celebrated a great accomplishment, the mortgage was paid off and we had a mortgage burning. This was something that Rev.Thomas wanted to be able to see, but to honor him, the congregation pulled together to see that this dream was fulfilled. We have been assigned quite a few Pastors since the loss of Rev. J.C. Thomas and they are as follows:

Rev. Pierson G. Kemp known for his love of hymns-he served from 1988-1989.

Rev. Kenneth E. Jones he was concerned about the growth and development of the church and for Waterbury. We also burned the parsonage mortgage under his leadership - he served from 1989-1990.

Rev. Kevin J. Agee continued the goals for growth and development within the church, his involvement in the community enabled us to reach out to the community. Our church was offered to enable persons who met for Narcotics Anonymous to have a meeting place for their weekly meetings. He served from 1990-1994.

Rev.Bonita Collins-Hobbs and Rev. William D. Hobbs were the first husband and wife team appointed to our church. They came with a vast amount of organizational skills and knowledge and were very dedicated to young people, making sure they were involved in church. They served from 1994-1997.

From 1997-2011 Rev. Henry Moultrie was appointed as Pastor. Rev. Moultrie began to encourage membership and fellowship by restoration and renewal of members as well as standing members of the church. He is currently working very hard to get the men back in Church. He started the Men's Sunday School Class; helped to reform the Male Chorus, implemented the Pastoral Staff meetings, and appointed a Youth Minister, Teen Spirit and the reorganization of the major boards of the church.

With a desire to fulfill a dream of Rev. Thómas, a baptismal pool was installed and we also had a chair lift installed for those members who are physically challenged. His current visions include: cosmetic repair of both the church and parsonage - he steps right in and gets his hands dirty to make sure that our home is presentable, reaching out to old members to get them back in the church and making sure that all members are involved and working in the church.

From 2011-present Rev. Chanita Thompson was appointed as Pastor.

Now Rev. Thompson began to encourage membership and fellowship by restoration and renewal of members as well as standing members of the church. She is currently working very hard in the church. She wants to take the church “From vision to victory”. She has started a new ministry called “Ministry of Communication”. She wants to get Gods word out into the world.

The Lord truly has brought from a mighty long way and continues to bless us each and everyday.

The power of Christian prayer God's Promise
Jesus gave His life so that you do not have to carry your burden. He knows this burden hinders you from having eternal life. He knows your sin burden hinders you from living the abundant life that God created you to live. He knows your sin hinders you from experiencing joy and peace that has no bounds and hinders you from receiving all that God has promised and created you to receive.

You just have to ask.
