Who we are

The Church of the Resurrection is an Anglican church located in Toronto’s East End, and founded over 100 years ago by neighbours who had a big vision for this neighbourhood. For many decades, the church experienced phenomenal growth, with hundreds of kids showing up every week for Sunday School.

Declining attendance in the 80s and 90s led to a core, dedicated congregation who in 2000 faced a tough decision: continued decline or … what exactly. And so they embarked on a remarkable journey when the Rev. Duke Vipperman, along with a tithe of families and members from Toronto’s Little Trinity Church, and another set of the adventurous from all across the city came to reboot the Rez, starting an extraordinary experiment we are still on today

The Rez continues to experiment and grow, with a deep commitment to being a parish in the neighbourhood, for the neighbourhood, with the neighbourhood and of the neighbourhood. We believe God is deeply at work here, and we have a deep calling to join Him on the journey in Toronto’s East. Our worship is informal and rooted in Anglican traditions. We value preaching, biblical teaching for all ages, liturgical worship (with broad musical expressions) and prayer.

Our mission: To Know Christ & to Make Him Known. God has preserved us so that, gathering in worship, we may proclaim good news to our neighbours.

Our vision Excelling In Hospitality and Making Followers of Jesus Today

Our core values: Pursuing Spirituality. Community, Justice, Beauty as we Serve, Connect, Grow, and Share

Says Rev. Burn:

I love discipling people as they come to faith and later as their faith deepens. My hope is to support families and children as they grow in faith and welcome the opportunity to work with you – and learn with you.
I grew up in a Christian home and have always known God. In early adulthood, God drew me closer through Scripture and I have been responding since then to an evolving call to make Jesus known.

Will and Julie have been married for over 10 years and have two sons.   Edit

Church of the Resurrection Service Times

Sundays

8:30 AM — This quiet, contemplative, eucharistic (communion) service is short and peaceful. Together we sing one traditional hymn and follow the rhythms of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. There is no kids’ ministry during this service but children are always welcome.

10:30 AM — Our largest Sunday gathering and celebration, we follow a pattern of worship which includes Bible readings, contemporary and traditional music, relevant preaching and community prayer. We often have communion. This service has full kids’ ministry available for kids 0-grade 8 as well as Junior and Senior Youth Group for Grades 6 through 12. We also have intentional intergenerational gatherings throughout the year.

Listen to our latest sermons here.

Evenings – We gather monthly for evening Taize song and prayer. Also, there are additional opportunities for creative worship, prayer and music throughout the year.

Most of our Sunday morning services follow an Anglican liturgy and we believe that the content of our worship is what is pleasing to God. The form of our music, and the band that leads it, varies from week-to-week (or song-to-song) but our primary concern is in supporting our communal life with a worshipful experience that engages our cultural expression of love for God.

Due to Covid-19 our in-person Sunday services are cancelled. We are planning to live-stream the service.

Other activities & ministries

Small groups are an important part of our life together. There’s likely a small group in your neighbourhood — maybe even on your street. For more information on starting or joining a small group, fill out our contact form.

Fresh expressions are alternative ways of doing church for those who would not likely come to the regular Sunday morning gig. Each year more than 50 of those who are are regular part of our life, come only to one or other of our fresh expressions.

Cell churches are those small groups that have four qualities: they welcome each other, worship together, reflect on the word of God in the Bible and have some form of witness/ mission as part of their life.

Dinner shuffles are inspired by the example of the extended family, we gather together for weekly dinners in larger-sized groups, typically consisting of four or more family units, whatever that family unit looks like. Each group has a vibe and feel all its own, but all have a desire to create deep bonds of commitment and community, modelling spiritual life for our kids in our neighbourhoods. We make meals together. We share food. We help each other with the dishes. We open our homes for hospitality. And we come as we are: in all our imperfections, with our dirty kitchens, and without pretension.

Common Tables happen once a month, where we share an informal meal together, fully provided by the hospitality team at the Church of the Resurrection. At the end of a busy week, CT is a time to be fed. Have someone else hold your baby. Hold a baby. Play a game. Hold a hand. Run around. Take it easy. And build a little community. We meet in the basement (or playground, if it’s sunny and warm), but, as always, CT starts when you get there.

The Garden at the Rez exists to serve the members of the community in and surrounding the Church by providing a community experience through gardening. The garden was started in 2011 by a core team who were interested in beautifying the property and creating a community project. In 2012 we transformed the south lawn into a full-scale community garden, inviting members of The Church of the Resurrection to garden alongside neighbours. Thanks to the tireless work of community volunteers, the garden now has 37 active gardeners and countless garden volunteers, turning what was once a piece of unused and inaccessible private land into a neighborhood hub, with garden gatherings, ‘work bees,’ jam-making, BBQs, and impromptu water fights and picnics. For more information, visit our site. We hope you’ll join us!   Edit

Special Needs/Accessibility

Our building is wheelchair accessible, with a lift that services each floor. When you arrive, if you need the elevator, enter through the door on the north side (there is a small driveway). There’s a doorbell there, and someone will come to assist you with the lift.   Edit
