Who we are
We are a Christian, Bible teaching church.
We also like to think of our church as a family. And as a family is made up of several generations so are we! We have a large number of families with small children, teenagers, students, young professionals, singles and married and a good group of older folks too – some of whom have been in the church since it was formed. We believe that this mix of ages is a real blessing and helps us to keep a balance of old and new in worship and many other areas of church life. What unites us amid diversity is our common love for Jesus, his word and one another.
So we’re Reformed, meaning that all our work and activity as a church agrees (so far as we understand it) with what God has revealed in the Bible and through his Son Jesus Christ. We’re also a Baptist church, meaning that we only baptise those who truly believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. And our church membership has the final say in major decisions that we need to make in the life of our church.
Emmanuel, formerly known as Leeds Reformed Baptist Church was formed in 1972. Peter Parkinson was the first Pastor until his retirement in 2005. The church has always had a burden for the poor and vulnerable and in the 1980’s a dedicated charity, Caring for Life was formed by Peter and some other members of the church.
Peter retired in 2005 and Wes Johnston took over as Senior Pastor at that time.
The church is now led by a Pastoral team: Wes Johnston, Matthew Seymour and Roger Barden. We are committed to teaching the Bible faithfully week by week – not simply explaining the truth it contains, but pointing to Jesus Christ as the only hope for our world today.
After many years of looking for a new building we have recently purchased the former St. Margaret’s Hall, Hall Lane, Horsforth which is now known as Emmanuel Baptist Church, Leeds. Following refurbishment this will be our permanent home from October 2016.
