Who we are
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church, which is located in downtown Decatur but draws its congregation from throughout the county. All 380 members are encouraged to take part in worship as lay leaders, greeters, musicians, and ushers.
First Presbyterian Church of Decatur is committed to loving witness to the church and community that all are welcome to worship, serve and share talents, passions and struggles. It is the nature of God’s grace that we extend compassion and acceptance with a hospitable heart. It is our vision and desire to grow and build relationships with all of God’s people where there are no boundaries of age, race, culture, socio-economic status, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.
If you are seeking a place to call home, our hearts and doors are always open.
Mission, ministry and music are the common threads woven together at First Presbyterian Church. People of many backgrounds interweave their many talents to bring exciting life to our congregation. Musical talents play a major role in the rich diversity of our programs. All ages are also provided with opportunities for education and fellowship. Church school classes and adult education programs teach us the Good News of the Bible while soup suppers, potlucks, workdays, retreats, walkathons, to name just a few, bring us together to share in the Good News and to spread it to others.
Our congregation is a family that worships and prays together inside and outside the church walls.
We actively witness beyond ourselves through our common ministries. We share in the joy of birth and the sorrow of death. We care for and visit those with physical illnesses; we counsel and pray for those emotionally burdened. We celebrate all aspects of God's gifts and use them to build a strong church family.

First Presbyterian Church Service Times
Services
8:00 Chapel Service
The 8:00 am service is held in the Chapel. This is a traditional service.
New Song at Nine (15)
The 9:15 service is also held in the Chapel. New Song at Nine (15) is a contemporary service with upbeat music provided by our band. On the last Sunday of the month, a mission project is planned. Mission projects have included cleaning neighborhood parks, assisting at the domestic violence shelter and doing yard work at Kemmerer Village, a Presbyterian children's home.
10:30 Service
The 10:30 service is held in the sanctuary. This is a blended service. It uses some elements of contemporary services with the more traditional responsive readings and hymns.
Taizé Service
The Taizé service is held on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:15 from September through May. This prayer service offers a taste of the character of the contemplative prayer services at the Community of Taizé. As at Taizé, the music has been chosen to help us enter into a time of silence and in song. The meditative songs offer short, repeated expressions of prayer, which may become our own prayers as we hear them, gradually come to learn them, and begin to join in singing them. You are invited to listen to the musicians repeating the songs while you settle into a sense of comfort in singing them yourself. Let the words and music slowly and gently fill you, drawing you to turn your attention to God in song and silent prayers.

Let no darkness overtake me
Visit, I beseech thee, O Lord, this habitation with thy mercy, and me with thy grace and salvation. Let thy holy angels pitch their tents round about and dwell here, that no illusion of the night may abuse me, the spirits of darkness may not come near to hurt me, no evil or sad accident oppress me; and let the eternal Spirit of the Father dwell in my soul and body, filling every corner of my heart with light and grace. Let no deed of darkness overtake me; and let thy blessing, most blessed God, be upon me for ever, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
