Lutheran Church of Guam Q&A

Question: Do I have to be Lutheran to commune with you?

Answer: You don’t have to be Lutheran to commune with us. If you are baptized and believe Jesus died and rose again to forgive your sins and give you eternal life and if you wish to “do this in remembrance of Jesus Christ,” please join us for communion. Both wine and grape juice are offered. Individually sealed communion cups are also available.

Question: Are children welcome?

Answer: Children are welcome in our worship service (let them make a joyful noise!). Our greeters would be happy to provide you with a children’s activity bag or books for the service, and children will have a special part of service just for them during the Children’s Message. Additionally, we have a cry room with a diaper changing table at the back of the sanctuary by the restrooms. The room has a window into the sanctuary so you can continue to follow along with the service.

Leader Bio:
Pastor Sean Dougherty and his wife of 24 years, Katryn, moved to Guam in July 2020 from Pennsylvania.

“Katryn and I are very excited by LCG’s call to serve and worship among all those who proclaim Christ as savior, who desire to know more about our Lord, and who wish to experience the power of God’s Spirit,” he said. “We are excited to learn about Guam’s cultures and grow with God’s people here.”

After graduating seminary with a Master of Divinity from Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown, Penn., Pastor Sean was asked to serve as senior pastor with the United Methodist Church and has since served consecutively larger Methodist churches across the United States, most recently at Reeders United Methodist Church in Reeders, Penn.

He gives God the glory for calling him — through his wife and through the Black Sheep Motorcycle Ministry, a motorcycle club dedicated to sharing the Gospel — to do His work. Sean and Katryn, better known as “Kat and Dog” in the biking community, enjoy riding his motorcycles across the country and, now, across the island.

He is versed in the Lutheran tradition, having raised both of his daughters in the Lutheran church. Sean and Katryn’s two daughters, now grown, reside in the U.S. mainland.

In addition to his master’s, Pastor Sean holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and is looking forward to finishing his doctorate in supernatural ministry through distance learning with the United Theological Seminary.

Sean and Katryn love hiking, the outdoors, and meeting new people.

They welcome you to the Lutheran Church of Guam to “come as you are and leave changed by Christ.”   Edit

Lutheran Church of Guam History

1966: The Lutheran Serviceman’s Center was dedicated for ministry at the present location of the Lutheran Church of Guam after prayerful efforts on the part of a group of Lutheran laymen. Both civilian and military personnel were served through the center.

1969: When the Lutheran Serviceman’s Center closed in 1969, the Lutheran Church of Guam was formed, and it became a congregation of the Lutheran Council in the United States of America, or one that was sponsored by the Lutheran Church in America, the American Lutheran Church, and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

1972: A parish hall was dedicated for the mission purposes of preschool classes, Sunday School classes, prayer gatherings, confirmation classes and fellowship activities. Since then, the congregation’s outreach ministry of Tender Shepherd Preschool and Child Care has continually served families and their children from 2 to 5 years of age by providing quality growth in a Christ-centered environment.

1988-2009: The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod worked together in pledging mission support for LCG. In spite of its many transient members, LCG grew by the grace of God.

2009: LCG assumed its own financial responsibility, disaffiliated with the ELCA, and affiliated with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ. It retained its affiliation with LCMS as well.

2011: LCG became what it is today, an independent Lutheran church with these two affiliations.
