Melton Mowbray Baptist Church Q&A

Question: What exactly is a Christian?

Answer: A Christian is someone who believes in Jesus Christ and follows his teachings. The Bible says ‘If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come.’ This means that when we become a Christian we may look the same on the outside, but something has forever changed on the inside. There are various metaphors to describe it – we have ‘changed country’, ‘come under new ownership’, or ‘been born again’. We, as Christians, believe that God sends his Holy Spirit to live within everyone at that moment.

Question: What do Christians believe?

Answer: Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he lived as a man on Earth about 2,000 years ago. But Jesus is himself divine: he is one person of a three-person God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe the accounts in the Bible which say Jesus was miraculously conceived and lived for about 30 years before beginning three years of travelling around the Middle East, teaching about God and healing sick people. Our teaching explains that Jesus was betrayed, tried and convicted on false charges and executed by crucifixion but rose from the dead and reappeared to hundreds of people. He then ascended to heaven to be with God. In the future, there will be a time of judgement. After that those who have put their trust and faith in Jesus, will be with him in eternity.

Question: Why are there so many different churches?

Answer: More than two billion people across the world describe themselves as Christians. The Christian faith crosses all boundaries of culture, ethnicity, class and nationality. There are Christians in every corner of the world, even in countries where it is dangerous to admit that you are a Christian because of the threat of religious persecution. Most can meet other Christians openly but some must do so in secret. People express their Christian faith in different ways which is why there are so many different denominations or styles of church. But the core beliefs are the same. The Bible book 1 Peter speaks of the Church now not as a building or a tradition but being made from ‘living stones’ – the Christian Church is its people. The same book also describes Christians as, ‘a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation belonging to God….Once you were not a people but now you are the people of God’. Being part of a church is an important part of life for a Christian. It is an opportunity to meet other believers and pray together and to praise and thank God. It is also a place where Christians grow in their knowledge and understanding of God and his love for humanity. But just going to church does not make anyone a Christian – anymore than being in France means you are French.

Question: What does it mean ‘to have a faith’?

Answer: Faith means believing in something you cannot see. But becoming a Christian is not a blind leap of faith. It might not be possible to prove the existence of God but there is plenty of evidence for the existence of Jesus and his death and his resurrection. The Bible has eyewitness accounts of people who spent years with him. They listened to his teaching, saw him die and saw him after he rose from the dead. Their lives were also changed forever by him.

Question: Who are Baptists?

Answer: Baptist churches are found in almost every country in the world. As part of the world-wide Christian church, Baptists form one of the largest families of faith, alongside other trinitarian Christian traditions such as Anglicans, Methodists, Reformed, etc.

For Baptists the concept of a family is important. The church is not so much a particular place or building, but rather a family of believers, committed to Christ, to one another and to the service of God in the world.

In this Baptist family everybody is equal, for everybody has a part to play in the service of God. There is no hierarchy of bishops or priests exercising authority over their members. Equality of status, however, does not mean that all have the same role.

Each local Baptist church appoints its own leaders – or ministers – to have particular responsibility for preaching, teaching and pastoral care. Working alongside these ministers are also deacons, who together with the minister(s) form the leadership team of the local Baptist church.

Baptists are grass-roots people, with a particular emphasis on the local church. These local churches are self-governing and self-supporting, ranging in size from twenty or so members to many hundreds. Although each Baptist church is an independent entity, Baptists nonetheless have always believed in associating with one another – and so the churches come together in regional, national and international spheres to promote and support the fellowship of Baptists everywhere.

Question: How can I become a Christian?

Answer: The Christian faith teaches that it is possible for absolutely anybody to have a fresh start, whatever they have done in their life. Being a Christian is not about going to church, living a good life or living in a Christian country. It is not even about believing in God. It is about being a follower of Jesus Christ and having a relationship with him. At first sight, this might seem impossible: Jesus Christ was born about 2,000 years ago in the Middle East and was executed by the authorities when he was aged about 33.

It is about being a follower of Jesus Christ and having a relationship with him.
But at the heart of the Christian faith is the belief that Jesus was, and is, God in human form and that he lived, died and came back from the dead. He then returned to heaven. His life, death and resurrection enable humanity to have a relationship with God.

The Bible book of John records what Jesus said about becoming a Christian: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’

For some people the moment they became a Christian was a dramatic occasion; for others it was a process that occurred over a period of time. But for all of them, it was a life-changing decision with eternal consequences. And it changed their spiritual status too. The Bible book, John, says people who have believed in Jesus and follow him have been given ‘the right to become children of God’. In other words, Christians are like adopted children of God.

That close relationship with God enables Christians to behave differently, and even do things that might seem impossible. For example, the Christian faith of a Dutch woman, Corrie ten Boom, enabled her to forgive a former guard at the Nazi concentration camp where she and her family were imprisoned when she met him after the Second World War.

The power of Christian prayer Make me stand out
Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me.
