Who we are

Loving God, loving each other, loving the community

Loving God and loving your neighbour; all of the Law and Prophets hang on those two great commandments. They are, in essence, a summary of the Bible and the essence of Northcote Baptist Church’s teaching.

But love is more than a feeling; it is a commitment and a motivation that moves you to action. It has to do with putting in the time and effort and care that it takes to develop a real relationship – a connection – with God, with each other and with our community.

For us at Northcote Baptist Church, love involves supporting and serving each other. This makes Northcote Baptist Church a friendly, family orientated church made up of a diverse group of people – from all walks of life and many different nationalities – struggling together to follow Jesus in our world and in all of life.

We freely admit we’re far from perfect, but we’re committed to the goal of becoming – by God’s strength – more and more like the human beings God intends us to be. Northcote Baptist Church Statement of Faith:

We believe in the true humanity and Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, who made atonement on the cross for the sin of the world…

In the divine inspiration of Holy Scripture as originally given, and its supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct;

The unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in the Godhead;

The universal sinfulness and guilt of human nature since the Fall, rendering all people subject to God’s wrath and condemnation;

Redemption from the guilt, penalty and power of sin only through the sacrificial death (as our representative and substitute) of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God;

The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead;

The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death of Christ effective to the individual sinner, granting repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ;

The indwelling of the believer by the Holy Spirit, and his activity in the Church today reproducing by his fruit the character of Jesus in our lives, and empowering us by his gifts to continue the ministry of the risen Lord;

The expectation of the personal return of our Lord Jesus Christ;

The sovereignty of God in Creation, Revelation, Redemption and Final Judgment;

The one holy universal Church, the Body of Christ, to which all true believers belong.

Northcote Baptist Church History

The story of the Northcote Baptist Church began in 1949 as a Sunday School in the home of Joseph and Sarah Thompson at 7 Hillcrest Ave. Just four years earlier, during World War Two, after 32 years as missionaries in China, they were forced under threat from the invading Japanese forces to escape from the coastal area where they were working.

Back in New Zealand they finally settled in Northcote where they saw a need, and started a Sunday school. The school quickly grew under their leadership and with the assistance and encouragement of local farmers, Mr and Mrs Eban and their family. Within a few years…

Adult services were started in the Thompson home, known as the Hillcrest Baptist Fellowship; In 1958 they purchased land next door to the Thompson’s house and the original church hall (30 feet by 40 feet) was erected; On 18 August 1958 the New Zealand Herald reported that about 200 people attended the opening; The first service of the new officially recognised church was held on 18 August 1963; The first minister/pastor of Northcote Baptist Church, Rev. Doug Rushbrook, arrived in the district during 1964; In 1962 Mr and Mrs Eban subdivided their farm and made a gift to the new Church of two sections at the end of Sylvia Road (Eban Ave was not complete at that stage); The church building was shifted to Sylvia Road in late 1963; and The present auditorium was opened on 5 August 1973 (most of the interior finishing and fittings was done by volunteers).

While this covers just the initial years, the story of God’s blessing continues with the development of many new ministries, and the leaving behind of others; all planned to meet the needs of new and changing and challenging times.

The power of Christian prayer Accept, O Lord
Accept, O Lord, my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my will. All that I am and have thou hast given to me; and I give all back to thee to be disposed of according to they good pleasure. Give me only the comfort of thy presence and the joy of thy love; with thee I shall be more than rich and shall desire nothing more.
