Who we are
Northern Community Church of Christ was formed in November 1999 in affiliation with Churches of Christ in Victoria and Tasmania, from four local Churches of Christ coming together – Preston, West Preston, Ivanhoe and Northcote – after three years of conversation, prayer and many meetings. This process was generous, hopeful and miraculous.
The four churches closed, sold their properties, pooled their resources and became Northern Community Church of Christ with a vision to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, responding to diverse needs and transforming society through many congregations and ministries in multiple locations across our region.
In 2003 the current ministry centre was opened at 81 High Street, Preston.
Over the past fourteen years Northern Community Church of Christ has experimented, taken risks and continued to seek ways of living out its vision. There have been many congregations during that time in a variety of styles, sizes and locations. Currently there are six congregations throughout the week that are diverse expressions of worship and congregational life, each authentic and meaningful. Three of these congregations meet at the ministry centre, while other congregations meet in homes, a nearby church and in a retirement village.
Northern has vibrant and active connections with the more vulnerable people of the Northern suburbs community, especially people who are long term unemployed, isolated and marginalised. Careworks, our community mission at Northern, developed from food parcels and a community meal and now includes two Op Shops on site, community and workers’ meals provided each week day, a vast Work Experience Program which involves 100-120 long term unemployed participants each week, emergency assistance, and daily programs including community meals, bike program, games, music, bingo and two community congregations.

May your light illuminate our hearts
Eternal God, this holy night is radiant with the brilliance of your one true light. May that light illuminate our hearts and shine in our words and deeds. May the hope, the peace, the joy, and the love represented by the birth in Bethlehem this night fill our lives and become part of all that we say and do. May we share the divine life of your son Jesus Christ, even as he humbled himself to share our humanity. Amen.
