Who we are
Rosslyn Hill Unitarian Chapel is an independent, self-governing and self-financing spiritual community. We pride ourselves on giving a warm welcome to all those members and visitors who join us at Sunday services and other events. Many appreciate this ‘time out’ in a busy week. After the service in our beautiful Chapel, we have a time of fellowship over refreshments. Members and friends help with the services and come together for other activities. As well as participating in Sunday services, members enjoy singing with the choir, supporting some aspect of social action such as our Cold Weather Shelter and participating in a group exploring spirituality/ethics. Spending time together, we find new ways to connect and support one another.
Our morning service is a more traditional 'hymn sandwich' with readings from diverse sources, hymn songs, prayer & meditation and a sermon or address. Our evening gathering is meditation-based, and varies including monthly gatherings such as the Soul Fuel gathering of acoustic music, poetry and storytelling; Sound Bath meditation; Labyrinth Walking Meditation; and Live Music and Meditation with music played on our Steinway Grand Piano. We frequently have guest speakers and musicians to enhance our Sunday experience.
What's a Unitarian?
Being a Unitarian is about having an open-minded and welcoming approach to faith that encourages individual freedom, equality for all and rational thought. We see different opinions and lifestyles as valuable and enriching and do not discriminate on grounds of gender, age, race, religion or sexual orientation.
As Unitarians, we like to say: ‘We need not think alike to love alike’. We think everyone has the right to decide for themselves what they believe.
With roots in Jewish and Christian traditions, our heritage includes being regarded as ‘dissenters’, who could be damned as heretics and even martyred for a belief in one God, rather than the Trinity. Since the 1960s, the general theology has broadened to recognise wisdom from all world religions, humanist philosophy and science. Beliefs are based on rational enquiry rather than external authority, and moulded by conscience, life experiences and a reverence for the earth and our natural world.
We welcome anyone who shares our tolerant and inclusive views, who embraces the freedom of being in a faith community that doesn’t impose creeds or specific beliefs, and who bases their approach not on dogma but on reason.

Rosslyn Hill Chapel History
Our congregation was founded as a dissenters' meeting in 1692. It became Unitarian by the time the current chapel was built in 1862. It is a beautiful example of Neo-Gothic Victorian style which was popular at the time and has impressive stained glass windows by William Morris/Edward Burne-Jones and Henry Holiday.

Eternal God, this holy night is radiant with the brilliance of your one true light. May that light illuminate our hearts and shine in our words and deeds. May the hope, the peace, the joy, and the love represented by the birth in Bethlehem this night fill our lives and become part of all that we say and do. May we share the divine life of your son Jesus Christ, even as he humbled himself to share our humanity. Amen.
