Who we are

We currently have about 80 people attending morning worship each Sunday. Our Sunday morning worship which is varied in style, is usually led by our Minister or a local preacher. We have regular family services, which are planned and led by members of the congregation, where the worship is more informal. The preaching is usually considered central to the service. This is in line with the church’s teaching on the authority of scripture.

Music is led by our Music Group and includes both modern and traditional songs and hymns.

Members of the congregation take part in worship through reading, leading prayers, children’s talks, drama, giving testimony etc.

There is also use of visual images through the regular use of a data projector. Children are catered for on a Sunday morning by our Sunday Club and Creche.

Activities during the week which include our toddlers’ group and ladies meeting amongst others, cater for a range of ages and interests. We also have a strong housegroup system with 7 midweek housegroups which take place during the daytime and evenings.

As part of our vision to become a healthier church we have recently been trying to develop further the prayer-life of the church and our role in bringing the gospel to our community through our service and evangelism.

We tithe all our church income, giving away 10% of our income each year to international, national and local charities. We also have a Community Fund which is used to provide help in individual circumstances as and when it is needed.

We are members of the Evangelical Alliance and the Family Friendly Churches Trust as we believe that both of these organisations give support and assistance in our commitment to bringing the gospel in a relevant way to all who meet here.

Sunday School / Children and Youth Activities

Under 12s:
  Edit
Under 18s:
Young People

We have a wide age range of young people attached to the Church and we try to ensure that our weekly worship is accessible to them. We meet as a whole church at the start of the service and then on most Sudays split into groups as shown below. These are staffed by church members who have up to date DBS checks. We also have stringent safeguarding procedures where all those involved with children and young people (and vulnerable adults) have been trained.

Creche

We have provision for children up to the age of approximately 3 in our creche from the time the young people leave the main service. This is staffed by two members of the church.

Sunday Club

Co-ordinator – Karen Baldock

This is aimed at children from the age of approximately 4 upwards. Children can attend Sunday Club until parents decide their children are ready to remain in the main service. As with the creche this is staffed by at least two members of the congregation.

All Age Worship

At regular intervals during the year we have a service where all ages remain together in church to worship and have fun together.

Communion

Children are welcome to take communion. When the service includes communion the young people will be brought back into church to re-join the rest of the congregation.

Yi-Ps Youth Nights

Who are we?

A Christian Youth Group for young people aged 9+ (or Year 5 onwards). Many of the young people attend or have friends at Scartho or Keelby Methodist Church. The young people are also encouraged to invite their own friends. The Youth Leaders have an active Christian faith that we will openly share with the young people. The young people will be encouraged to explore their own faith and ask questions but do not have to make any faith commitments unless it is by their own choosing.

What do we do?

We meet twice a month on a Saturday night from 6:30-8:30 for various activities e.g. team games, challenges, cooking, and short interactive bible studies We alternate between meeting at Scartho Methodist Church and Keelby Methodist Church, and also have some nights out or additional day trips e.g. cinema, bowling.

Why do we get together?

Many reasons: to encourage one another, have fun, learn about Jesus and what it means to follow him, to make new friends, to eat!!

Good to know

Money - there is no regular subs but we will ask for donations when there is an evening with larger costs e.g. Christmas meal, bowling.

Safety - All leaders have up to date DBS checks and adhere to the Methodist Church Safeguarding Policy for Children and Vulnerable Adults.

Behaviour - Young people are expected to show respectful behaviour towards leaders and other young people which includes appropriate language, listening to one another and making an effort to include everyone within the activities. Mobile phones are allowed but no photos or use of social media during the evenings without specific permission.

Parents and Toddlers

The Parent and Toddlers group meets on Fridays, in term time only, between the hours of 9.30am to 11.30am. Again this is run by members of the church family who have relevant DBS checks.   Edit

Scartho Methodist Church History

The history of the Methodist Church goes back to the eighteenth century when John Wesley and his brother Charles felt the influence of God on their lives and began to preach about Jesus Christ throughout England.

In October 1735, John was on a voyage to America when the ship was battered by a storm and he was fearful for his life. He noticed that a party of Moravian Christians on the boat seemed to have no fear as the waves tossed the boat about in the sea. He realised that they had something that was causing them not to be afraid and that it was something that he lacked. John made friends with the leaders of the group and, over a period of time, he realised that they had a real faith in the living God.

Three years later in 1738, John went to a meeting where he heard about how God can change lives and hearts through faith in Him. In his journal, John recorded the following: “About a quarter before nine…I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt as though I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given to me that he had taken away MY sins, even MINE, and had saved ME from the law of sin and death.” Charles had had a similar experience three days earlier and had written about this in the form of a hymn, “Where Shall My Wandering Soul Begin?”

Over the course of the next fifty years, John Wesley travelled throughout the country on horseback with the sole purpose of telling people about Jesus and how they could have their sins forgiven if they believed in him. John visited Grimsby several times during his travels and wrote in his journal, “It is no more than a middling village containing a small number of half-starved inhabitants.” The population of Grimsby at the time was about one thousand and the population of Scartho about one hundred. When John Wesley was first asked to preach in Grimsby, he was unable to do so, so he sent a John Nelson to go in his place. He preached to several thousand people and a Methodist Society was formed in Grimsby.

Methodism soon spread through Lincolnshire and the first Methodist society met in the village of Scartho in 1784. There were initially sixteen members and they met in the home of their leader, John Burton. It wasn’t until 1836 that the first chapel was built on a piece of land that was 30ft by 20ft. By 1868, the average congregation size had grown significantly and the building that we now call Scartho Methodist Church was erected. The village also had a Primitive Methodist Chapel that was opened in 1867 in Springfield Road.
