Who we are
South Church was born in the hearts of a small group of believers who met to pray at the home of George Isbell. These members of the First Baptist Church of Lansing felt the need for mission work on the south side of the city. On May 26, 1889 they organized a Sunday School. By July of that year the small church met weekly for Sunday School and a midweek prayer meeting. In October of that year, a small building was constructed on South Street and named the South Street Chapel.
In July 2000, South Church moved to a new location and facility on Cornerstone Drive in Delta Township, just four miles west of its former location. On 36 acres of land, South has room to grow and reach the greater Lansing area for Christ.
South Church now faces future challenges, rooted firmly in the gospel of Jesus Christ, rejoicing in God's past work in us, and joyfully anticipating His plan for us. Our newly adopted purpose statement, 'Passion for Christ, Compassion for Others' aptly describes our continued commitment to the fulfillment of God's call.

Sunday 9:35 & 11:05 am - Worship Center
These services have a formal setting with pew-style seating and greater levels of light for the congregation. The balanced services are led by the South Choir, Vocal Teams, band and/or the orchestra using a blend of traditional hymnody, meaningful praise and worship songs, and selections by classical and sacred composers.
Creative Service
Sunday 10:55 am - Chapel
Service elements in this service are less formal and are programmed to be free-flowing with lower levels of light surrounding the congregation. The music is predominantly guitar-driven and contemporary. The creative service music is led by the worship team putting modern instrumentation to worship songs and traditional hymns.
Evening Service
Sunday 6:00 pm - Chapel
This service is very simple and traditional, singing predominantly hymns and almost always accompanied by the piano only. The teaching often extrapolates on what was taught on that Sunday morning. Occassionally the message is presented by a special guest or missionary speaking on a special topic of interest.

Kids at South are loved and treasured. Each week they "climb" the mountain together with caring teachers and helpers and enjoy a unique mountain-themed environment. There they learn of God’s plan for their lives as revealed in His Word. This learning occurs through relationships with other children, teachers and helpers as well as through age-appropriate lessons and, of course, through play and fun!
Every week throughout the year on SonView Mountain, you’ll discover a well-rounded program that includes Sunday morning classes, AWANA, Vacation Bible School, service opportunities, Kids Choir and more. Â
