St. Andrew's History
Final service held for dwindling congregation
Peter Wicks and Karlene Bourdeau are bathed in the muted multi-coloured light from pictorial stained glass inside St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.
The century-old church in Tilbury offered its dwindling congregation their final service Jan. 9 and then closed the doors.
“(It was) very sad. Almost like going to a funeral, I would say. Because it’s part of your life,” said Bourdeau. “The church is part of your life. It has been for me.”
Although she wasn’t baptized in the church, Bourdeau taught Sunday school, was married, baptized and confirmed her children and saw her daughter get married and her mother buried at the church.
“We had a full choir, a very thriving and energetic Sunday school I taught the preschoolers and I had 20 (kids),” she said.
She remembers summer picnics, Christmas concerts, preparing meals for Rotary and a number of women’s, men’s and youth associations creating a tight community of worshipers.
The congregation has dwindled from 60 to 80 regular Sunday churchgoers to a mere eight to 10 in recent years.
“In the last 15 years it gradually declined, it was a struggle,” said Wicks, who’s been a warden at the church for a decade and a half. “Religion doesn’t mean as much.”
Wicks said people are being asked to work longer hours, over the weekend and recreation and family time takes up any spare time.
About a year ago, the congregation took a hard look at the finances for the struggling church and began talking about closure.
“You don’t just make a decision off the top of your head, you really think it through. That’s why the process takes so long,” said Pastor Gary Parker. “The diocese has been supporting this church for a year, helping out with the bills, as they go through that process. They don’t go through it alone.”
Bourdeau said the process helped deal with the grief of losing the church but it was still painful.
“I think everybody left the meeting when the final decision was made with tears in their eyes,” she said. “Very upset that it had to come to that.”
The sister church in Comber will remain open and Parker hopes the Tilbury congregation will throw their support behind it as well.
He has been reassigned to the Anglican Parish of the Transfiguration.
St. Andrew’s will eventually be put up for sale, said Parker.
Bourdeau said the congregation hopes the building won’t be demolished.
“We’ve kept up pretty well. There was a new roof put on four or five years ago (and it has a) new furnace. It’s in fairly good shape,” said Wicks. “It’d be nice if another church took over.”

Listen, my friend!
Listen, my friend! Your helplessness is your best prayer. It calls from your heart to the heart of God with greater effect than all your uttered pleas. He hears it from the very moment that you are seized with helplessness, and He becomes actively engaged at once in hearing and answering the prayer of your helplessness.
