Who we are
Welcome to St. John, a church committed to providing a Christian community with worship, fellowship, and education for people of all ages. Offering a wide array of programs, organizations and worship experiences, the St. John congregation has been “serving the heart of St. Charles since 1868.”
Our Mission
Our mission is to nurture spiritual growth and share the message of Jesus Christ by word and deed in our community and beyond. We are here to serve, to welcome, and to love.
Our Vision
Our vision is to live God's message of love and compassion in our daily lives. To engage all of our members we will gradually change the worship service to incorporate richer and varied worship styles and music. We will honor the traditions developed at St. John while adapting to meet the interests and needs of all members. We will respond quickly and passionately to people in need and we will engage members of all ages to work together in ministry and mission. We will find ways to make our historic church beautiful to all who visit-through the warmth of our members and the beauty and functionality of our facilities.

Leader Bio:
The Rev. Dr. Lisa Martin comes to us with 20 years of ministry experience, and a lifetime in the United Church of Christ. After two decades serving the church, Pastor Lisa remains excited by her vocation and optimistic about the future of the Church. And she is really excited for the opportunities for ministry at St. John.
She has her Doctor of Ministry degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary where her final doctoral project was “Creating Visual Art as a Congregational Practice.” This has led her to develop a Liturgical Arts team that creates art for worship, to utilize spiritual practices through the arts for adults, youth and children, and form a weekly creative expression program with the homeless community. She has her Masters of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary, where she also met and married her husband, Rev. Jim Hilker. She graduated from American University with a double major in International Studies and Economics and where she spent a semester in Rome, Italy studying Church History and Art. She also spent a summer studying Spanish at the Instituto Antigueño in Guatemala.
Pastor Lisa and her husband, Pastor Jim have served together for 15 years at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Pottstown, PA. Highlights of their ministry include developing a multi-faceted homeless ministry; establishing a stay-at-home Mission Week that attracts youth from across the community; creating a worship service that holds together liturgical traditions with more modern elements of worship; leading the congregation from a place of conflict and through a congregational revitalization program; and initiating the workshop rotation model for Sunday School.
Pastor Lisa has served on numerous Conference and Association Committees and with the Pottstown Ministerium. She is an advisor to the Ministries at Main Street Homeless Shelter, a member of the Committee of the Nameless (a collaboration of county social service agencies), and a director on the board of Art Fusion 19464, the local art school and gallery. She also has been a contributing curriculum writer for rotation.org.
Before Trinity, Pastor Lisa served bi-vocationally at St. Peter UCC in Hookdale, IL, and at Council for Extended Care of Mentally Retarded Citizens in St. Louis.
She and Jim have been married for 21 years. They have three children: Emma (16), Brendan (14), and Amanda (12). A dog, Cookie, and a chinchilla, Pepe, complete the family. They plan to settle in the city of St. Charles, and are looking forward to the many opportunities that St. Charles offers. Her father currently resides in Sarasota, FL, but her family of origin hails from the Chicago area, where various cousins still live.
Pastor Lisa is an avid reader, finds creative outlets in watercolor painting, writing and music, and enjoys gardening, cooking and long walks.

St. John United Church of Christ History
Listen, my friend!
Listen, my friend! Your helplessness is your best prayer. It calls from your heart to the heart of God with greater effect than all your uttered pleas. He hears it from the very moment that you are seized with helplessness, and He becomes actively engaged at once in hearing and answering the prayer of your helplessness.
