St John the Apostle Catholic Church History
The History of St John the Apostle goes back to 1924 and the building of the first church in Florida, St Bruno’s in Shamrock Street. The church was opened by Bishop Charles Cox OMI, who carried the title of Vicar Apostolic of the Transvaal Vicariate. There was no resident parish priest and the parish had to wait another 15 years for the arrival of Father Loretto Du Manior OMI, who was appointed by Bishop David O’Leary OMI.
In 1965, a year before St Bruno’s was extensively damaged by fire, moves were already afoot to build a new church as the parish had outgrown St Bruno’s. Fundraising began, and eventually, approval was given for the purchase of two houses in Havenga Street, Florida Park – the site of the present St John the Apostle church.
On Sunday 27 September 1970, the Blessing of the Church of St John the Apostle was carried out by Bishop Hugh Boyle of Johannesburg.
The ordination of Rev. Fr. Terence Barnard OMI took place at St. John the Apostle on 11 December 1975, and the profession of the final vows of Sister Sheila Barrett.
A Garden of Remembrance was established in 1986 for the internment of the ashes of deceased parishioners, and the Golden Jubilee was celebrated the following year on Sunday 23 April 1989 which was presided over by Bishop Reginald Orsmond with some of the previous parish priests concelebrating.
In 2010, plans got underway to purchase the property behind the church, in Allen Road, which was subsequently renovated to establish the new Pastoral Centre.
The following priests served as priests at St Bruno’s and St John the Apostle; Frs.
Loretto Du Manior, Patrick Abel, William Lambe, Francis McNicholas, Sean Murphy, Brendan Sullivan, Joseph Lloyd, Norman Maroun, Michael Fitzpatrick, Clayton Jackson, Michael Touhy, Paul Jackson, Patrick Hartin, Martin Killoran, John Finlayson, Peter Doherty, Bongani Sithole, Keith Gordon-Davis, Donald McLoughlin, Jean-Marie KUZITUKA DID’HO (Current)
