St. Joseph Church History
Meriden Catholics, mostly Irish and living west of the railroad tracks, were first served by St. Rose pastors. In 1895, Father Paul McAlenney purchased a former Methodist church on West Main Street for use as a chapel of ease. The ivy covered brick edifice was initially dedicated to the Sacred Heart. On September 23, 1900, however, Bishop Michael A. Tierney created a new parish west of the tracks, under the patronage of St. Joseph. Founding pastor Father John T. Lynch purchased Goodwill Avenue property in September 1901 as a future church site. In 1903, when a basement chapel opened, the old chapel of ease was converted to a school staffed by the Sisters of Mercy. The solemn dedication occurred in early 1908. A new school on the West Main Street Mather property soon enhanced the parish. The institution was dedicated on September 5, 1915, by Bishop John J. Nilan.

Light of the World
Jesus, the Light of the World, as we celebrate your birth... may we begin to see the world in the light of understanding you give us. As you chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship you in meekness of heart. May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving. Amen.
