St. Patrick's Catholic Church History
History of St. Patrick’s Church
In 1830, a little band of Catholics who had recently arrived from Ireland gathered in Digby to discuss erecting a Church. For the most part, they were ex-soldiers who had settled around the town. There were also a few farmers and planters who had accompanied the Loyalist to Digby from the American Colonies. Materials were gathered and a lot was bought high on a hill overlooking Digby. By the spring of 1834, after much effort and struggle, their Church was completed. It could seat 100 people. They called it St. Patrick’s in honor of the Patron Saint of their homeland.
With the passing years however, it became too small and was in bad need of repairs. In 1931, Fr. Murphy got together a group of parishioners to discuss building a new Church. A lot of land was purchased and a concrete basement was built in 1934. It was roofed over and served as the Church for 7 years. Times were hard in those days. And it took time to raise money. Then came the war and it felt like to them they would never finish it. So Fr. Murphy mad a plan. He visited every mill in the Acadian districts of the Province and asked them to donate the lumber to build a Church. They agreed to doing this, even the non-Catholic competitors helped, so they had enough lumber to finish the Church. Then he wrote the paint dealers, the nail dealers and roofing companies, cement dealers, electrical supply and so on. They all donated. He felt God would also help with the labor. After telling the Parishioners about this … they pledged enough for the labor to build the Church. And that is how our Church came into being as it is today.

Teach us to serve Thee
Teach us, good Lord, to serve Thee as Thou deservest: To give and not to count the cost; To fight and not to heed the wounds; To toil and not to seek for rest; To labour and not ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do Thy will.
