St Therese Catholic Church History
Beginnings of our Parish of St Therese, Catholic Church Edenvale, Gauteng
The first Church of St Therese was built in 1938, however the Catholic beginnings in Edenvale can be traced further back.
For some months prior to the opening of the Church, Mass was said at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Lee.
As early as 1904 in the time of Fr DeLacy, OMI, a property was acquired by the Church authorities. It was Horwood's Farm at the lower end of the present Horwood St. It was regretfully sold.
Bishop O Leary gave the patronage of St Therese to Edenvale, on the eve of her feast, 2nd October, 1938, and was fixed with the blessing and opening ceremony of the new Church.
The foundation stone had been blessed by the Bishop and laid by the two Hurly brothers on 12th June, 1938.
Father George Standing was appointed the first Parish Priest.
As the community grew there was a need for a new Church to be built to allow for more people to attend the services. The new Church was then designed and built to seat approximately 650 people.
A rectangular plan was designed with the alter at the apex so that closer participation of the congregrants could be fully realised.
The solemn blessing of the new Church by Rt. Rev Bishop Hugh Boyle, DD, was on the 11th February, 1968.

Help me pray
Grant that I may not pray alone with the mouth; help me that I may pray from the depths of my heart.
