Sunnyside UMC Q&A

Question: What is it like?

Answer: We are a loving, caring church with an easy-going approach to our services.

Question: Where do I park?

Answer: Plenty of parking on the north side of the building, ample spaces next to the building for visitors and handicapped.

Question: What do I wear?

Answer: Casual dress is the norm but it is fine if you dress up. We just want you to worship here!

Question: What about my kids?

Answer: Kids are welcomed and enjoyed. We have a children's sermon and then they go to the Education Building for Bible study. They are welcome to stay for the pastor's sermon if you wish.

Question: How can I get connected?

Answer: We have several ways for you to connect with us and the community. There is a Sunday School for adults and children at 10:00AM in the Education Building and a Wednesday Bible study from 5:30 to 7:00PM. We have a Women in Faith group that meets on the second Saturday of the month at 9:30AM and a United Methodist Men's group that meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00PM.

Question: Who Are United Methodists?

Answer: The United Methodist Church is a global denomination that opens hearts, opens minds and opens doors through active engagement with our world. The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

A United Methodist is someone who joins in that mission by putting faith and love into action. We believe that God loves all people, and that we share in expressing that love. So the United Methodist tradition emphasizes God's grace and in serving others. We believe that Jesus Christ is the fullest expression of God's love--showing us the fullness of God's care through Jesus' teachings, death and resurrection.

John Wesley started the Methodist movement in 18th century England. His teachings on practical divinity (living out our faith) and appeals to reason and experience form important aspects of United Methodist practice today.

Question: What Do United Methodists Believe?

Answer: The United Methodist Church shares a great deal with other Christian denominations. We believe God's grace is open to all, and therefore practice 'open Communion'--meaning that anyone may participate in receiving Communion. We believe salvation is an open gift from God, accepted by individuals according to their own free will. The United Methodist denomination is a 'big tent' theologically, providing space for theological discourse and, at times, disagreement.

Like many other Christian groups, we affirm the beliefs expressed in the Apostles Creed. These include:

The belief in one God, who is the Creator and sustainer of the universe.

The belief in the Trinity, that there is one God in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is fully human and fully divine.

Question: What Do United Methodists Do?

Answer: John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, taught that we pursue our faith in community and action with others. We practice a social holiness. We insist that personal salvation always involves Christian mission and service to the world. The United Methodist Church has a long history of action and advocacy for social justice.

United Methodists are active in their communities and in the world through a variety of ways, including:

Participating in local mission projects and service initiatives

Supporting global mission efforts through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and other mission organizations

Advocating for social justice and working to address issues such as poverty, hunger, and inequality

Providing educational and vocational training opportunities

Offering counseling, support groups, and other forms of pastoral care

Creating and supporting community development programs

Leader Bio:
Rev. JoAn Kinrade, an ordained Deacon in the North GA Annual Conference, grew up in the farming community of Sioux Valley, MN, and learned a great deal about God and the cycle of life by tagging along with her dad as he tended large herds of cattle and hogs and worked fields of soybeans, corn, oats and hay.

JoAn is a “what you see is what you get” woman of faith; a compassionate listener and no-nonsense truth-teller with a gift for journeying with people through the joys and sorrows of life. She enjoys “doing life” with people from all backgrounds, helping them become aware of God’s divine presence in everyday moments.

In addition to being an ordained pastor, JoAn is a certified Spiritual Director. Prior to her appointment to Sunny Side UMC in July 2021, she served as Minister of Spiritual Formation at Newnan First UMC and as Weekend Chaplain at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. For 18 years prior to God’s call to the ordained ministry in 1999, she was an elementary teacher in Coweta County.

JoAn has been married to David, a retired Minister of Music and Organist, for 40 years. They have two adult daughters, Rachel Kinrade and Emily (Eric) Thompson. They have three grandchildren, Riley and Mark Thompson and Harper Rae Carnes.

When JoAn is not preaching, teaching, visiting, or studying, she can most likely be found playing with Luke, her miniature golden doodle puppy, hiking or walking outside, reading a novel, or spending time with family and friends. She enjoys a good cup of coffee or adult beverage and would love to get to know you!

United Women In Faith

Here at Sunny Side UMC, we have an awesome group of ladies that meets the second Saturday of each month at 9:30AM in our Education Building. We are a group of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. We are very mission-minded, both locally and abroad.

Our United Women In Faith has adopted “The Little Free Library” located at the Sunny Side City Hall. We always need new or gently used children’s books. We also partner with Beaverbrook Elementary, focusing on staff encouragement and support. Please join us in this great local mission!

We encourage and invite all ladies to join us for Christian fellowship and service.   Edit
