Who we are

Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary building is the oldest stone church in the country and was consecrated a cathedral in March 2010. There are many historical landmarks within the grounds and inside our building.

We are a centre of peace and reconciliation and we seek to be Christ in the community.

We are open every day from 8.30am to late afternoon. Our welcome desk is staffed by volunteers for much of the day, from 9am to 3pm. They can help with general enquiries.

We have brief daily prayer services at 8.30am, midday and 3.45pm – they are open to all. Sometimes it’s a good opportunity to share a burden or seek peace.

Tuesdays, the Bishop’s Eucharist takes place at 7am.

Wednesdays a 10am Communion is held.

Sunday morning our services are at 8am and 10am, with the 10am being a family service on the last Sunday of the month.

Midweek services take place in the Upper Room (upstairs in the Hatherly Hall attached to the cathedral. Sunday services take place in the Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall, across the road at 40 Vivian Street.

Our grounds are open for anyone to wander around. There are 80 historic headstones, which have undergone restoration in the past two years.

In addition there is a garden of remembrance bordered by engraved stones and featuring a winding path and beautiful planting. The garden is used to bury ashes and anyone can arrange for a burial by contacting our church office on 758 3111.

Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary Service Times

Every Sunday we have two services, each offering fellowship, music and the opening up of the Scripture.

8am service of Holy Communion is quiet and concise with two hymns. Some people like to slip in to this service and quietly leave at the end.

On the first Sunday of the month, tea, coffee and toast is available after this service. It’s an opportunity to catch up with people or meet those on a similar journey.

10am service is also a Holy Communion service. It attracts a cross-generational mix of people. Toys, drawing and games are available for toddlers at the back of the church.

It's been more than 7 years since the last service times update. Please make sure to contact the church to confirm service times.
